East Longmeadow – Irene (Shaban) Sullivan, 93, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017 in a local nursing home. Irene was born on September 29, 1923 in Chicopee; a daughter of the late Dymtro and Rose (Waronka) Shaban, who emigrated from the Ukraine in the early 1900’s. She was a first grade school teacher for over 25 years in Chicopee and Springfield Public School Systems. Irene was a devoted wife and wonderful mother. She was a resident of Longmeadow since 1971 and was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Longmeadow.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years William M. Sullivan, Sr. who passed away in 2015, their daughter Christina Mary Sullivan who passed away in 2005, her brother Wasel Shaban; and her two sisters, Anne (Shaban) Knightly and Marie (Shaban) Sheline. Irene is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William M. and Therese M. Sullivan, Jr. of St. Cloud, FL; her brother, Dymtro Shaban of Wilbraham; 3 grandchildren, Marissa St. John, Devon Sullivan and Tragan Sullivan; 1 great-grandson, Sawyer St. John; along with nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held beginning at 9:45 AM on Monday, February 20, 2017 from Forastiere Smith Funeral & Cremation on 220 North Main Street in East Longmeadow, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 AM in St. Mary’s Church in Longmeadow. Burial will take place in Longmeadow Cemetery, Williams Street in Longmeadow. Visiting hours will take be in the funeral home on Sunday, February 19, 2017 from 4-7 PM.
