Arthur Logan

LONGMEADOW - On November 19, 2019, Arthur Joseph Logan Jr. of Longmeadow passed away at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Art was a man of great integrity and deep faith, a fiercely loyal friend, and a compassionate doctor. He was honorable, loyal, and generous with his time and humor. Art enjoyed meeting and speaking with new people, whether spending summers on Cape Cod and winters in Naples, Florida, or traveling with his family to Ireland, Italy, or his favorite spot Bermuda. An avid golfer, Art spent time after retirement on the links, took great care in fixing his home, climbing ladders, building furniture, making French toast or the patent-pending “McLogan” breakfast sandwich. Born in Springfield on September 30, 1931, the son of the late Arthur and May (Cashman) Logan. Married to his best friend and travelling companion, Polly (nee Smith) for 62 years with whom he raised their ten children. His brokenhearted children are Mark (Nancy) of Westfield, Kathleen (Edmund Rung) of Montclair, NJ, Timothy (Sheila) of East Longmeadow, Kelley of North Billerica, A.J. of Brooklyn, NY, Kevin (Leslie) of New Milford, CT, Brian (Susan) of Somers, CT, Colleen of Norton, Maureen Burke (Mike) of Mansfield and Patrick (Amy) of Canton. He leaves behind his superstars, his beloved grandchildren Sarah, Brooke, Katie, Emily, Megan, Josh, Brendan, Jon, Bridget, Ciara, Ryan, Samantha, Riley, Kylie, Grace, Jack, Madeline, Abigail, Molly and Luke and many nieces and nephews.  He was the beloved brother of Sr. Marilyn Logan of Holyoke and Robert Logan and his wife Ann of Stratford, CT. Educated in Springfield public schools, Dr. Logan graduated from Technical High School class of 1949, College of the Holy Cross class of 1953, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, class of 1958 and further graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts and Boston University. Art was one of the original caddy-scholar recipients of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship. He went on to have a successful career and dental practice for almost fifty years until his retirement in 2007. His professional achievements and community contributions were both great and small, including being a longtime communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Longmeadow, where he was instrumental in the opening of the school, involved in the parish council, school board, PTA, Boy Scout troop leader, boxing coach and CCD teacher.  His friendships were long, his humor endearing him to all those who encountered him in any situation. The family is grateful to all the many caregivers who served him over the years, who Art immediately put at ease with his wit and genuine interest in people. Visiting hours will be Friday, November 22, 2019 from 4-7 PM at the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2019 beginning at 10:45 AM at the funeral home followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 12 Noon at St. Mary’s Church, Longmeadow. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Tinkham Road, Springfield. Charitable contributions can be made in his name to JDRF, the American Cancer Society, or the charity of one’s choice.
