Obituary

Douglas E. Parker, Jr was called to Heaven on April 24th.  As a professor/Coach, he dedicated his life to helping his students/wrestlers find success in sport and life by realizing their potential.   The same was true with his family which he treasured.  Doug was a graduate of Gloucester High School, class of 1944 and Springfield College, class of 1951.  Doug was also a WWII veteran serving in the Army Airborne Division.  From 1955 to 1990 he was a Physical Education Professor and Wrestling Coach at Springfield College.   Doug earned his spot in the Hall of Fame for having the most wins by any Wrestling coach in Springfield College history with 35 winning seasons.  His contributions to the sport of wrestling were immeasurable.  Doug was predeceased by the love of his life, Patricia Alves Parker, they were happily married for 64 years.  He was also predeceased by sister Winnifred Figurido and his eldest son, Kirk M. Parker, whom idolized him.  Doug leaves his youngest son Scott D. Parker and wife Mary.  He also leaves his loving twin sisters Jean Savage and Joan Burke of Gloucester.  Doug leaves his grandchildren Kirk M. Parker Jr and fiancé Patti Foley, Derek D. Parker and wife Lindsey, Scott Parker Jr. and wife Tara, and Lauren Parker.  Doug will be missed by his 6 great grandchildren, Emma, DJ, Ellie Mae, London, Benson, and Brian.  Doug had an amazing life, impacting thousands, and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know him. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home on Saturday May 8th from 1-3pm for a period of visitation. Reflections and stories about Douglas will be shared from 3-4pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Springfield College Wrestling Doug Parker Fund. And as the man would always say “Keep Smiling”.
