Obituary

Edythe Emma (DeVall) Chiba, 93, of Agawam, passed away peacefully June 3, 2019. Born in Springfield on January 27, 1926, she was the daughter of Howard and Naomi (Vedovelli) DeVall. She attended Springfield public schools and graduated from the High School of Commerce. Edie was a 20 year employee of Associated Transport Trucking Company in West Springfield and retired in 1978. Edie’s volunteer work has been extensive. She was a member of the office Division of the Teamsters Local 404. She was a current member of the Agawam Senior Center, a longtime member of the Agawam Council on Aging, she was on the Board of Directors for the Agawam Federal Credit Union, United Commercial Travelers, Teamsters Local 404, the Agawam Democratic Town Committee, she was a founding member of the Agawam Democratic Women’s Club, she was an honorary life member of the Agawam Bowman’s Club, she worked on JFK’s Senatorial Campaign, Agawam Centennial Committee, Agawam Senior Center Adhoc Planning Committee, and was part of the Senior Games for ladies pool and bowling where she won awards in both events. One of her most proud moments as a volunteer and as an Agawam resident was to be an active participant in the No Smoking ordinance for the Town of Agawam. In addition to her parents, Edie was pre-deceased by her husband of 52 years, William “Bill” Chiba, who passed away in 1996; and her dear and loving friend George F. Gabriel in 2017; and brothers Richard and John DeVall. She is survived by her sons, William and his wife Dianne of Westfield and Anthony of Agawam; three grandchildren, Brian and his wife Shannon, Jeremy and his wife Teresa, and Seth and his wife Jessica; eight great-grandchildren Meghan, Samuel, Annibelle, Angel, Patience, Faith, Mia Grace and Gavin; many nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends. Visiting hours will be held from 9AM-12PM on Monday, June 10, 2019 at Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home, 985 Main Street, Agawam, with a funeral service beginning at 12PM. Interment will follow in Springfield Street Cemetery, Feeding Hills. Donations may be made in Edie’s memory to Shriners Hospital Donations Department, 516 Carew St, Springfield, MA 01104 and to Friends of the Agawam Senior Center, 954 Main St, Agawam MA 01001.
