Eugene F. Carney

Springfield – Eugene Francis Carney, 94, passed away on November 17, 2021, with his family by his side. He was a son of the late Frederick and Anna (Liebel) Carney. Gene (often known as Red) was a lifelong Springfield resident and graduated from Technical High School in 1945. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948. Gene worked for the A & P Stores for thirty years, then Falls Provisions in Chicopee, and in his retirement he worked part time for Big Y in East Longmeadow. For over 50 years, Gene was a member of the Springfield Lodge of Elks #61, where he was a former Exalted Ruler, liked playing bocce and bowling, and serving on many committees. When Gene wasn’t working, he enjoyed taking long walks, playing pool, socializing with friends and spending time with his family. Gene was predeceased by his beloved wife Theresa (Pannier) Carney of 55 years. He was also predeceased by his brothers Fredrick and Joseph Carney and his sister Ann Hemsworth. He will be missed by his daughter, Charlene A. Carney of Springfield, his son, Louis J. Carney and his wife Anita of Chicopee, grandchildren Holly Bradley, Matthew Carney, Michael Carney and his wife Michelle, great grandchildren Logan and Gavin Carney. He also leaves his beloved sister Mary Cipriani Allen, brother George and sister-in-law Marilyn Carney. Calling hours will be held Sunday, November 28, 2021, from 2pm – 5pm, at Forastiere Smith Funeral and Cremation, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow, MA. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 29, 2021, beginning at 12pm with a funeral home service at 12:30 pm. Burial with military honors will be held at 2pm at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA.
