SPRINGFIELD – Frederick Gordon Burritt died on June 18, 2019 just shy of his 96th birthday. The son of Gordon and Mary Victoria Burritt (Budnick), he was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Catherine (Moran) and son James. Frederick is survived by his four remaining children: Gerald (wife Laura) of Falmouth, MA; Mary Ann of Westborough, MA, Jean Robertson (husband Robert) of Barrington, RI, and John (wife Jen) of Longmeadow, MA. He also leaves a grandson, Robert Caldwell Robertson, III of Barrington, RI and much-loved cousins, niece, nephew, and friends. Fred was mechanically inclined and could fix just about anything. He obtained his pilot’s license at the tender age of 16 and served his country during WWII in the Asia-Pacific Campaign first as a civilian and then in active duty from 1942 - 1946. After the war he started and ran a series of four successful businesses over almost 30 years with his friend and business partner Eugene Galica, before putting his skills to work at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. He was also a Master Pontiac Car Salesman before retiring. A devoted family man, Fred also liked to fish and golf He was full of energy and had a zest for life well into his later years. He became a fixture at Longmeadow Package Store working alongside his son John. He was the best cook in the family and a talented watercolorist who loved nature and music. His generosity and kindness was paid back in spades by his wonderful neighbors who regularly dropped by and delivered his newspaper up that steep driveway. The Burritt family also wishes to acknowledge the care he received from the Veterans Administration of Springfield and the Baystate Palliative Care Unit.
