Obituary

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. Karagin “Joe” Setian, 86 of East Longmeadow, was called home on Monday, February 11, 2019. He passed into the kingdom of Heaven in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. Karagin was born on March 25, 1932 in Indian Orchard, MA to Aravag and Yeprem Setian. He was predeceased by his parents, and siblings; brothers, Zadig and Zorab (Constance) and sister, Elise Pirro. Karagin was the epitome of love and kindness and led a true Christian life; one of humility, compassion, values, generosity and hard work. He received his Master’s Degree in Education from Westfield State College and worked for the Town of Longmeadow, MA for 35 years as a guidance counselor and schoolteacher. Karagin had many hobbies and pleasures. He enjoyed caring for his home, tending to his garden and riding his tractor. He enjoyed taking his family on trips which included visits to Lake Sunapee, NH, Watch Hill, RI, Stockbridge, MA and anyplace they wanted to go. He loved his church, Armenian heritage, a good game of cribbage and his many sports teams; the New York Yankees, Boston Celtics and UCONN women’s basketball. He was very involved in his community as a longtime member of the Lyons Club. He also enjoyed the simple things in life; a cup of coffee, cigarette and the daily crossword. He was well known for his culinary expertise, especially for making shish kabob, stuffed grape leaves and homemade raspberry sauce from the raspberries grown in his garden. Though he had many joys, the greatest love of Karagin's life was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Bernadette (O'Keefe) Setian and their 5 children: Thomas (Linda), Daniel, Kathleen (George), Mary, and Monica as well as 3 grandchildren; Brittany, Evan and Daniel. He is also survived by sister in-law, Lucille Setian and brother in-law, Pasquale Pirro. He lives on in hearts of all who knew him, including many nieces, nephews, cousins, students and friends. Karagin touched the hearts and lives of so many through the beautiful and meaningful life he lived. Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours at Forastiere Smith Funeral Home; 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow, MA on Saturday February 23 from 9:30-10:30am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, to be celebrated at 11:30AM, at St. Michael’s Church, 128 Maple St., East Longmeadow.
