Obituary

Nancy Whittemore Wissemann, aged 93, died on May 22, 2023.  Nancy was born in 1930 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Helen Crawford Whittemore and Bishop Lewis Bliss Whittemore of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in theology and later obtained masters degrees in education and library science. In 1953, she married Andrew Wissemann, a priest in the Episcopal Church who later was elected bishop of the Diocese of Western Massachusetts. While raising four children, Nancy taught remedial reading in the Pittsfield public schools. She subsequently entered the field of library science and held several positions, including director of the West Springfield Public Library, until her retirement in 1994. Throughout her life, Nancy was an active volunteer, both in the church and teaching reading to adults. Nancy is survived by her son, Michael Wissemann of Sunderland, MA; her daughter, Anne Westcott of East Windsor, CT and Anne’s husband, Roy Westcott; her daughter, Mary Wissemann of Boston, MA, and Mary’s husband, Andrew King; her son-in-law, David Burr, and his wife, Pauline Burr. She is also survived by Kimberly Wissemann, Mark Miller, and her grandchildren: David Wissemann and his wife Jessica Wissemann; Jacob Miller and his fiancé, Sarah Charbonneau; Julia Miller; Caleb Burr; and Joshua Burr. She is pre-deceased by her daughter, Martha Burr, who passed away in 2017. A service will be held at 11:00 on Thursday, June 15th at Christ Church Cathedral at 35 Chestnut Street in Springfield, MA with a reception to follow. To leave an online condolence visit www.forastiere.com.
