Richard Murphy

September 25, 1946 ~ June 16, 2022 (age 75) 75 Years Old

Obituary

Richard “Dick” F. Murphy died on June 16, 2022 at Baystate Medical Center with his loving wife and son by his side after a short illness. Dick was predeceased by his parents, Agnes (Devine) and John H. Murphy, and his infant son, Timothy John. Dick was a 1964 graduate of Cathedral High School. He went on to graduate from Norwich University and received his MBA from C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.
One of the best amateur golfers in the area, Dick was known as Mr. Four Ball, having won fifty during the span of his competitive career. With longtime golf partner Ron Goldsmith, he won twenty-five two-ball tournaments. Dick was a two-time New England Public Links Champion, won five Western Mass. Amateur contests, and was Club Champion at Franconia GC eight times. Dick started playing at the age of 13 at Franconia GC with a fun loving group that became life-long friends. With more youthful energy than money, they were known to sneak on the back nine and play from dawn to dusk, most of the time completing 54 holes. In 2007, it was his great honor to be inducted into the Western Mass Golf Hall of Fame. Four years ago, he attended the Master’s Tournament at Augusta National. It was the trip of a lifetime, made even better by sharing the experience with Greg.
When he was no longer competitive, later years were spent with summer Sundays at the beach. He wasn’t particularly fond of the beach but it was his wife Patty’s happy place, and the promise of his favorite seafood platter at the end of the day was too much to resist.
Dick leaves behind his two great loves, his wife Patty (Albano) and son Gregory; his best friend of over sixty years, Ira Kowarsky; his brother John Murphy; sister-in-law Tina McLaughlin and her husband John; brother-in-law Anthony Albano and his wife Aimee; cousins, Katherine Smith and Judith Manferdini Smith, and four nephews. Dick also leaves his BathFitter family including Jason and Dana Cusimano.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, June 23, 2022 from 4 – 7 PM at Forastiere Smith Funeral & Cremation, 220 North Main Street, East Longmeadow, MA.
