Obituary

Valentino J. Scatolini passed away on Thursday May 14, 2020. He was born in Springfield, MA on February 14, 1928 to Giulio and Emma (Brandini) Scatolini. He was the last member of his family that included 5 sisters all of whom lived in the Springfield area. Val was a graduate of Technical High School and served in the US Army during WWII. Val was the founder of the Val J. Scatolini Insurance Company in 1962 which is still a family-owned business. He also was a Springfield Police Office and retired in 1983 after 31 years of service.  During his career, he was part of a security detail for presidential candidate John F. Kennedy when he visited Springfield.  He also was one of two officers injured in the Winchester Square riots in the 1960s but returned to work after a lengthy recovery. During his retirement, Val enjoyed many years in Florida where he spent his winters in the North Lauderdale area. While in Florida, he worked as a security and parking lot attendent for the Winterhaven Red Sox.  He enjoyed all professional sports, especially baseball and football.  He loved music, especially singing and dancing. His voice could be heard at many gatherings where he sang his favorite tunes to family and friends. He adored his dog Maggie who was his companion to the very end. He could be seen walking Maggie in his neighborhood or having her sit on his lap in his home.

Val was pre-deceased by his wife Myra.  He is survived by his son, Bill Scatolini (Tracy); his daughter, Carol Scatolini (Pat Gardner); son, Steven Scatolini (Lauren); and nephew, Frank Pugliano (Rose); as well as three granddaughters Mia, Jenna, and Ava Scatolini; numerous nieces and nephews, and the mother of his children, Patricia Tiberio. Besides his wife and parents, his sisters also predeceased Valentino: Bianca, Louisa, Eda, Yolanda and Eleanor.

Due to the current climate of public gatherings, services were held privately and Val’s burial took place in St. Michael’s Cemetery. A memorial mass will be in the future at St. Cecilia’s Church.
