Valerie (Butler) Lundberg, 79, of East Longmeadow, passed away on October 30, 2019 with her loving family by her side. Val was born in Springfield, MA on November 18, 1939 to the late Arthur and Elaine (Daze) Butler. She was a 1957 graduate of the High School of Commerce and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Springfield College in 1961. Val was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students during her years of teaching at Stony Hill School in Wilbraham, working in the Placement Office at her alma mater, Springfield College and lastly, teaching at Mt. Carmel School in Springfield. As important as this aspect of her life was, her true calling was as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Throughout her life, Val treasured her children’s activities, gourmet clubs, family holidays and vacations, and sharing her love of music. She truly cherished the friends she met throughout her life. The support she received from friends and caregivers during her long illness was immeasurable. Her most treasured gifts to us were her abounding love, unwavering faith, and showing us how to handle life’s challenges with courage and grace. Val was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, James H. Lundberg in 2014. She leaves her four beloved children, Gregg A. Lundberg and his wife Marlene, Kristin J. Waterhouse and her husband Kevin, Jill N. Lundberg and her fiancé Gordon Paddock, and Erin J. McGovern and her husband Bernard; adored grandchildren Joshua, Brittney, Haylee, Kaitlin, Thomas, Brendan and Allison; sisters Pamela Basinski and Denise Hughes; and sister-in-law Sally Lundberg and her husband Alfred Lawrence. Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 1 from 4-7 p.m. at the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 N. Main St., East Longmeadow. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 2 at 8:45 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Michael’s Parish, 128 Maple St., East Longmeadow. Rites of Committal will be private at Gate of Heaven Cemetery at a later date. Contributions in Val’s memory may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
